SEO Case Study:The Landscape Architecture Specialist

How a high-end garden design business transitioned from paid advertising to an organic-first lead generation engine.

Industry: Luxury Landscaping & Garden Design
Location: South East England
Business Type: High-End Local Service

Client Overview

The client is a premium landscaping and garden design firm specialising in large-scale residential projects.

Historically, the business relied heavily on Paid Search (PPC) to generate enquiries. While this kept the phone ringing, the cost-per-lead was high, and the traffic was often "low-intent," resulting in a high volume of visitors who spent very little time on the site and rarely converted into high-value projects.

The goal was to build a sustainable SEO foundation that would allow the business to reduce its reliance on paid ads while increasing the quality of incoming leads.

Results At A Glance

1.3% Organic Conversion Rate (vs. 0.05% for Paid Search)
57% of all Key Events now driven by Organic Search
8x Higher Engagement: Organic visitors stay on-site for 1m 32s (vs. 11s for Paid)
Strategic Transition: Successfully phased out paid ad spend as organic leads overtook paid conversions.

The Challenge

Before the SEO campaign, the business was caught in a "paid traffic trap."

The GA4 data showed a stark reality: although Paid Search was driving over 57% of the total website sessions (11,596 visits), it was only responsible for 6 conversions. The engagement time for these paid visitors was a mere 11 seconds, suggesting the ads were reaching the wrong audience or targeting generic terms that didn't align with the client’s premium service.

The goal was to:

  • Build a technical and content foundation that attracted "ready-to-buy" clients.

  • Increase the Average Engagement Time to ensure visitors were actually viewing the portfolio.

  • Prove that Organic Search could deliver more leads than Paid Search, allowing for a total shift in marketing spend.

The Strategy

We implemented a phased SEO strategy designed to "earn" the traffic that the client was previously "renting" through ads.

 Technical Foundation & Experience

We audited the site to ensure it reflected the luxury nature of the business. By improving page load speeds and the mobile gallery experience, we ensured that once a user landed on the site, they stayed there. This is reflected in the 67% engagement rate for organic traffic seen in the final results.

Shifting from Volume to Intent

Paid ads were targeting broad terms like "gardeners." Our SEO strategy shifted focus toward high-intent, "long-tail" keywords such as:

  • Professional Garden Design [Location]

  • Luxury Landscaping Portfolio

  • Large-scale Residential Garden Remodel

The "Switch" Logic

We monitored the data weekly. Once Organic Search reached a "tipping point"—where it was delivering significantly more Key Events (51) than Paid Search (6) despite having a fraction of the total traffic—we advised the client to begin reallocating the ad budget into further SEO content and brand building.

Business Impact

The transition from paid-reliant to organic-first has fundamentally changed the business’s bottom line.

By building a foundation of high-intent content, the website now attracts users who spend an average of 1 minute and 32 seconds browsing the client’s work. These are no longer "window shoppers"; they are qualified prospects.

The business has now successfully moved away from the high monthly overhead of PPC. The "crutch" of paid ads has been removed, replaced by a self-sustaining organic engine that delivers 57% of their total leads with zero "cost-per-click."
